Plant-e has won the Winnet Water Innovation Award in collaboration with the municipality of Zeist. With the research grant that was won, a Plant-e tubular system was installed in the sewage of the De Brink kinderboerij in Zeist. This system contributes to a sustainable waste water chain by using the sewage water for the generation of electricity and purifying the water. This process reduces the emission of methane. Methane is a 23 times stronger greenhouse gas than CO2.
Research questions which we try to answer in this pilot include:
- How much electricity does 20 meter Plant-e tube in a sewer pipe permanently produce under sewage water?
- Is it possible to make an estimate for methane inhibition by using electricity from sewage water. the use of electricity from sewage water make an estimate for methane inhibition?
- Can the MFC technology be integrated in a sewer pipe? Can we execute a first design study?
