INTERNSHIP: ENERGY HARVESTING FROM PLANT-MICROBIAL FUEL CELLS

Plant-e

Plant-e is a young start-up that develops products to produce electricity using living plants, through plant-microbial fuel cell (PMFC) technology. We are growing fast and within a year, we are expecting to go from 10 to 20 full-time employees. Within the R&D department, we are working on different research questions ranging from fundamental studies (to understand the system) to applied research (to assess the performance of our products in different environments). We have a close collaboration with Wageningen University for more fundamental research as well.

Job Description

In Plant Microbial Fuel Cells (P-MFCs), organic matter from plants and soils is converted into electricity. This conversion is done biologically, by electrochemically active microorganisms. Plant-e developed a system that utilizes this conversion by harvesting the electrons and producing useful electricity. Harvesting energy at the maximum power point of a P-MFC is an important step in maximizing the energy yield. The generated power by the PMFCs is continuously changing due to changes in the environmental conditions, which makes maximum power point tracking (MPPT) a challenging task. From the literature, we know that the maximum power occurs when the internal resistance of a P-MFC is close to the external resistance. Thus, probing its current internal resistance can help us with MPPT. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is an advanced technique to measure the internal resistance of an electrochemical system. In this internship, we are looking for an enthusiastic intern who continues working on the improvement of the current setups and further studies the application of MPPT and EIS on our plant cells.

Requirements

For this internship, we are looking for an enthusiastic BSc/MSc student:

  • In Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering or similar, that has electronics and/or programming skills and experimental experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with EIS and power point tracking is a plus.
  • P-MFC or MFC knowledge is a plus.
  • Good communication skills in English, both in writing and speaking.
  • A good team player and able to work in a collaborative environment.

Conditions of employment

The interns at Plant-e are offered a minimum of a 4-month contract, which can be extended if both parties are willing to do so. A fixed stipend amount of 500 Euros per month is paid. The students are responsible for finding a room for themselves. At Plant-e, we offer more than just working, by enjoying for example spontaneous drinks (borrel) or having delicious burgers at the nearby café.

Additional information and application

For applying for this position, you can send your CV and a max one-page motivation letter (in English) to office@plant-e.com.
